Every year Smithfield Foods hosts an internal awards ceremony to recognize our facilities and employees who have made the greatest impact in environmental excellence and employee health and safety over the past year. This year’s event took place in Orlando, Florida.
“Ultimately, the credit for our company-wide achievements in preventing injuries and enhancing workplace safety, and furthering our sustainability efforts, goes to our employees because they are the ones on the front line who are committed to making our practices and processes successful,” said Dennis H. Treacy, Smithfield’s executive vice president and chief sustainability officer.
The environmental President’s Award was presented to Farmland Foods of Crete, Nebraska, for its community outreach project. It partnered with the TeamMates Mentoring Program in Crete for the past two years as part of Learners to Leaders. Smithfield’s educational outreach initiative helps young students find the confidence they need to succeed in life by pairing them with a caring adult mentor who provides guidance and support on a regular basis.
And the health and safety President’s Award went to the Smithfield Packing Company facility in Kinston, North Carolina, for not only integrating an Employee Injury Prevention Management System (EIPMS) into its operation exceptionally well, but also for managing two major construction projects without injuries and maintaining some of the lowest injury and illness rates within the industry and within Smithfield Foods.
